What you need to know about Anorexia nervosa

Anorexia nervosa is a kind of eating disorder that makes one to lose more weight. Person having this kind of disorder has intense fear to gain weight even though they are underweight. Because of this, they make themselves engage to exercise and diet too much and think of other ways on how to lose weight. There is no exact reason why anorexia nervosa happens. However, there are many factors that are involved in this kind of disorder. Few to mention are the hormones and genes that provide some roles in this condition. In fact, even social attitudes promote thin bodies types to get involved. There are risks factors involved in anorexia nervosa and it includes overly focused on rules or trying to be perfect, having certain cultural or social ideas regarding beauty and health, eating problems when times of early childhood or infancy, negative self-image, anxiety disorder during their childhood and become always worried. Also, they pay more attention to their shape and weight. This disorder starts during pre-teen or during teenage years and young adulthood. Anorexia nervosa is more common to females especially to white women who are achievers in schools and those who are goal-oriented in family and to their personality.

Symptoms of Anorexia Nervosa

Person who has this kind of disorder usually has intense fear to gain weight or to become fat, refusing to keep their weight and admit danger in weight loss. They focus on body shape or weight instead. Some people who have anorexia nervosa show yellow or blotchy skin that is covered with fine and dry hair, slow thinking, confusion, poor judgment or memory, depression, wasting away muscles or body fats, lose bone strength, has extreme sensitivity to cold and dry mouth. Other people have limits in the food that they eat and show behaviors like cut food into small pieces or move it around the plate instead of eating, exercise all the time even if they are hurt, busy or the weather is bad, go to bathroom right after meals, refuse to eat around other people and use pills to make themselves urinate, bowel movement and to decrease their appetite. To help these people, there are lots of test needs that need to be done. These tests include urinalysis, total protein, liver function test, kidney function test, electrolytes, electrocardiogram, CBC, bone density test and Albumin.

Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa

Treating anorexia nervosa is a big challenge to help people recognize their illness. There is a goal in this treatment and this is to restore the normal eating habits and body weights of the patient. There are different programs that are designed to treat this disorder to let these persons gain weight. This can be done through the use of schedules in eating, reducing amount of physical activity and increasing social activity. Most patients begin with short hospital stay followed by day-treatment program. Since treatment for anorexia nervosa is quite difficult, there is a need for hard work for both families and patients to overcome this kind of disorder.
